Samsung Electronics revealed yesterday that it is considering selling NAND flash memory chips to Sony Corp, and several other electronics companies.

Samsung is holding down prices of the chips, due to intense competition from Japan-based rival, Toshiba.

The NAND memory chips have become very popular in portable devices such as digital cameras, MP3 players, and mobile phones, because of their ability to retain data, even when power is turned off.

“Samsung Electronics is considering signing contracts to supply NAND flash chips to major companies, including Sony, but nothing in detail has been decided,” said the South Korean electronics firm in a Boxing Day statement.
