Skype has just released the long-anticipated upgraded version of its popular VoIP telephony software.

The beta version of Skype 2.0 was launched earlier today, and includes a myriad of impressive new features, including video calling, and a toolbar to connect Skype with your Microsoft Outlook contacts list. Version 2.0 also includes handy personalization features, such as ringtones, and special icons to express your current mode to those on your contacts list.

Although this is only a beta version, and will likely still be tweaked before its final release, Skype has made a point of making it freely available for any Windows user to download. The reason for this accelerated release is probably that the company wants to get its video calling features on the market as soon as possible, to avoid losing market share to Sony’s recently launched Video over IP service.

With this new release, Skype is hoping to turn their service into the world’s first mainstream “picture phone” for the consumer market.
