Telus and the BC Government have come to an agreement that will see high-speed internet service extended to 31 more rural communities by the end of 2006.

British Columbia’s biggest telecommunications company has agreed to spend $110 million on network expansion upgrades over the next year, with the help of grant money from the provincial government.

“Affordable high-speed internet access for all British Columbians is part of government’s goal to make B.C. the best educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent,” said Labour and Citizen Services Minister, Mike de Jong. “Improving connectivity will help build sustainable communities, improving opportunities for business, education and health care.”

    1. Hello: I’m delighted that Telus will be expanding DSL service in rural BC. However, I wish to speak up for those like myself and my neighbours who live just a liitle too far from town to receive DSL services. I currently live in a small central interior town of just under 5,000. High speed internet is available in town which is on Highway 16, the main east-west travel corridor and thus in a more heavily populated area. I am 13 km. out of town and confined to dial-up with the only alternative being very expensive satellite internet. I’m looking forward to the day when the capability of DSL can be pushed outwards from populated centers and urge Telus to consider upgrading it’s facilities to make this possible. R. Boyd

    2. Hi, i live in a small town called Monte Lake just outside of Kamloops BC, in between Kamloops and Vernon, it is right beside Westwold, and Westwold recently got a highspeed service, but you need to be in line with it or else you cant get it, and there is a mountain in between so i cant get it. I am just wondering if you guys could possibly get some information on how that service works and if there is any plans to get this service in my area or any other high speed service, i know there is not much people, but we do need it, thankyou.

    4. I live in Cherry Creek, a few kms outside of Kamloops, B.C. There has been high speed internet to some residences on my road but at mid point, the rest of us go through a different switching station. When I moved out here 6 yrs ago, I was promised high speed within 2 yrs. Still on dial-up. So I wonder when it is going to happen?

    5. High speed internet is available in Monte lake with a cellular aircard. Sierra 595 with a yagi directional antenna. $75.00/month unlimited data plus $55.95 for the card with a 3 year contract. $200.00 for the antenna + (may need a amplifier $300.00). So for $255.95 and 75/month i get 1.5 MB/s down and 2-300 up .

    7. Hi everyone, I’m just beond the reach of Telus ADSL. Satellite is just not worth it. But there’s a wireless company called China Creek I’m trying to get info from but they havn’t answered my email yet ( 4 days) anyone have any experiance dealing with them??

    8. Hello All
China Creek wireless has been around for a few years now. What amazes me is that I cannot find ANY reviews +or- on this service. It’s very limited to the amount you can download (10 gig per month) yet calls itself competitive. Telus gives 60 gig per month at the same rate. China Creek charges an additional $10.00 per gig if you go over their limit.
That works out to Five Hundred Dollars per month more, for the Government Granted China Creek Deal!

      …Very competitive, right!
