UK Company Sued for Sending Unsolicited Email
1:28 am on December 30, 2005 | Category: Email, Law, Web Services
A Channel Islands businessman by the name of Nigel Roberts has won a first-of-its-kind court ruling against Media Logistics UK, which sent illegal Spam email to his personal account.
Roberts is the first person to take advantage of the recently passed European laws allowing recipients of unwanted emails to sue for financial damages.
Although the actual damages involved were very small – a mere £270 settlement – this is still quite a monumental victory against those who send commercial Spam messages. After all, if every person who received an unwanted message sued for £270 and won, the people that send unsolicited bulk email would find themselves in the poorhouse very quickly.
How this will effect the world of email in the months and years to come is still uncertain, but setting this sort of precedent, and sticking to it, certainly has the potential to make companies think twice before sending Spam.
