Verizon to Sell Yellow Pages Business
1:30 pm on December 6, 2005 | Category: Business, Telecom Services
America’s second largest telecom carrier, Verizon Communications, has confirmed plans to sell its yellow pages directory services business.
The company currently publishes about 1,750 different directories, including Super Pages, which is the largest business directory in the US. The total value of this massive directory empire has been estimated as high as $17 billion.
There has been some speculation that internet search engines, such as Google, may have some interest in buying into the directory business, as an expansion of their local search businesses. Most analysts are dismissing such rumors, however, due to the fact that yellow pages advertising isn’t really a fast growth industry, and doesn’t fit with the business plans of most internet companies.
Instead, it is more likely that the bulk of Verizon’s directory business will be purchased by private equity investors, who are seeking relatively low-risk, easy-to-manage businesses to invest in.
