Telecom equipment manufacturer, Nortel is working with Alberta’s Special Areas Board (SAB) to create an 8000 square mile WiMAX broadband in that province next year.
The network will cover large portions of Alberta’s rural southeastern corner, and operate on a 3.5 GHz frequency with data speeds of 1 Mbps to 3 Mbps. Access to the network will be offered by NETAGO, a recently formed wireless ISP.
“This WiMAX network will support our goal of bridging the digital divide through affordable broadband wireless Internet services to users located in rural areas of Alberta,” said SAB chairman, Jay J. Slemp, in a statement about the plans.
