Yahoo to Offer Free Online VoIP
6:10 am on December 9, 2005 | Category: Messaging, VoIP, Web Services
The internet telephony market is about to gain another major player, with Yahoo planning its own online VoIP software, along with an alternative to Skype’s popular SkypeOut service.
As with Skype, in-network PC-to-PC calls will always be free. The “Phone Out†feature will allow users to make in-country calls to any telephone for as little as $0.01/minute, and international calls from $0.02/minute. There is also a “Phone In†feature, which allows users to pick a phone number, and receive incoming calls for about $30 a year.
Yahoo already offers some VoIP functionality via its instant messaging platform, but this new service brings them into direct competition with current internet voice leader, Skype, and broadband phone providers such as Vonage.
