A task force working on a faster and more advanced version of the popular Wi-Fi standard is a step closer to making the 802.11n standard a reality.

The group has finally settled on a draft proposal for the new hardware specification, which will use multiple antennas to allow for significantly higher potential speeds of up to 600 Mbps.

There is still a lot of work to be done before the new standard is finalized, but things are definitely going in the right direction. The next step will be for a group of IEEE engineers to the proposed specification, and point out any problems that they see. After this process is complete a broad group of IEEE members will have to vote on ratification.

If all this goes according to plan, we can expect to see the 802.11n standard fully ratified by late 2006 or early 2007. Consumer products based on the draft proposal, however, will likely be released even sooner, possibly by the middle of this year.
