Alltel Corp. has reported very mixed fourth quarter wireless earnings, with somewhat weak net profits, but a higher-than-expected number of new subscribers, especially for their prepaid services.

Alltel added a total of 147,000 new subscribers in the final quarter of 2005, including 90,000 new prepaid wireless users. This is a very obvious example of the increasing popularity of pay-as-you-go cell phones.

With a total subscriber base of 10 million users, and a potential service footprint covering 76 million, Alltel has done a good job of handling its recent market swap arrangements with Cingular, Sprint PCS, and US Cellular Corp.

The company’s total revenue in the fourth quarter was $2.58 billion, with net earnings of $0.77/share.
