1:57 am on January 12, 2006 | Category: Telecom Services, Wireless Technology
Boeing announced its biggest order of satellite products in nine years, yesterday, with a total value of “well over $500 million,†according to the company.
The purchaser is called Mobile Satellite Ventures, a privately held communications partnership owned by Motient Corp, Skyterra Communications, and others.
The deal will involve Boeing launching three of its most powerful geo-mobile satellites, which will be used to support a hybrid satellite/cellular network for voice and data communications in North and South America. The first of these satellites is due to be ready in 44 months, allowing it to launch in late 2009. Two others are set to follow suit in 2010.
With primary antennae spanning almost 75 feet across, Mobile Satellite Ventures claims that these will be twice as large as any existing commercial satellites.
