Dell has teamed up with Vodafone to bring built-in high-speed wireless data access to users of Vodafone’s network in France, Germany, and the UK.
Dell announced yesterday that it plans to embed Vodafone’s High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology into laptops sold in Europe. The hardware will have backward compatibility with older 3G wireless data technologies, such as UMTS and GPRS.
Laptop makers have recently become a major part of the 3G wireless data industry, by striking deals like this one with mobile carriers around the world. HP and Lenovo, for example, are both making laptops that have built-in compatibility with Verizon’s EV-DO network.
“Our collaboration with Dell is an important part of Vodafone’s plan to provide customers with new mobile solutions that use HSDPA to bring the full potential of mobile broadband to life,” said Vodafone executive, Nick Jeffery, in a statement about the most recent deal.
Wireless carriers around the globe are hoping that this cooperation from computer makers will ensure a greater market for cellular broadband technologies in the years to come.
