High Tech Computer announced yesterday that Japanese carrier; NTT DoCoMo will soon begin selling some mobile smartphones running on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system.

This could signal a shift in focus for the company, which has previously been a strong supporter of the open source Linux operating environment.

Although the Japanese market in general is happy with Linux-based phones, this latest decision may be a result of pressure from business customers, who often favor the more standard Windows platform.

“It sounds like a nice breakthrough for Microsoft, but it remains to be seen how well it will do,” said Gartner analyst, Todd Kort. “(DoCoMo) is testing the waters, seeing what the demand might be, and trying to find out whether it’s real.”

Customers in Japan can expect to see the first Windows-based DoCoMo phones becoming available in the second half of this year. So far, however, the company hasn’t revealed any exact dates or pricing information.
