The WiMAX Forum has officially approved the first group of products that work using the 802.16 wireless networking standard.
These products include hardware from Redline Communications, Aperto Networks, and Sequans Communications. Certification is a major victory for all three of these companies, with In-Stat analysts predicting that the market for Mobile WiMAX equipment could easily be as high as $3.2 billion by the year 2010.
Products that conform to the 802.16 standard are able to use Mobile WiMAX networks to wirelessly transfer data at speeds of up to 75Mbps. Unlike 802.11 Wi-Fi technology, WiMAX has a potential range of up to 10km in urban areas, and 50km in rural regions.
