LG to Unveil Two New Mobile Broadcasting Phones
9:15 am on January 3, 2006 | Category: Mobile Devices, Wireless Technology
LG Electronics has recently developed what it says are the first mobile phones for the Media FLO and DVB-H wireless broadcasting standards.
Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H), and Media Forward Link Only (Media FLO) are currently competing with Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) to become the dominant mobile broadcasting standard.
LG plans to showcase the two new handsets at the Consumer Electronics Show on Thursday, as well as the DMB phone that they developed in the summer.
The fact that LG has now created phones for all three standards, in an obvious attempt to hedge their bets, and avoid backing any one technology. This is probably the smartest approach for the time being, as the global competition between the standards is still anyone’s game.
DVB-H probably has the highest potential market reach, as it is compatible with more than 70% of the world’s mobile market, but DMB has a clear head start, and is already being used in a number of countries. Media FLO also appears to have a promising future, especially after being selected by Verizon Wireless for its new mobile television service, set to launch in September.
By making handsets for all three standards, LG is keeping their options open, and increasing the demand for their products, regardless of which technology becomes the most dominant.
