More Content Providers Sign On For BT IPTV Service

UK telephone giant, BT has just announced three new content deals for its IP television service, set to launch in late 2006.
Children’s programming providers, Nelvana and HIT Entertainment, along with science and documentary giant, National Geographic Channel, have all signed on for content partnerships with the new IPTV service. This will allow BT to broadcast history, science, nature, and investigative programming from National Geographic, as well as popular kids shows like Bob the Builder and Pingu.
This comes just a short time after BT announced partnerships with Paramount, Warner Music Group, and BBC Worldwide last month. Such strong programming is sure to draw a good number of subscribers to the first-of-its-kind IPTV service, which will combine digital aerial television with broadband-powered video on demand, and be powered by a Microsoft software platform.
“We are building a fantastic entertainment offering for all the family by partnering with the best. Any service of this kind is only as good as the content it offers, which is why we have swiftly signed these significant entertainment deals,†said BT TV Services CEO, Dan Marks. “Significantly, our service will be offered nationwide and not restricted to metropolitan areas, and customers will not be required to commit to a monthly subscription.â€

Is a set top box required or will the programming be delivered over the internet?

Yes, the service will require a set-top box, which is provided by electronics maker, Philips. Software for the box is to be provided by Microsoft.
