New Dell Laptops to Include Cellular Broadband Technology
5:30 am on January 31, 2006 | Category: Wireless Technology
Dell has recently struck a deal that will see US hardware maker, Novatel Wireless, providing the computer giant with embedded EV-DO and HSDPA cellular broadband chips for upcoming notebook computer models.
The forthcoming line of Latitude notebooks, for example, will have built in 3G cellular modems manufactured by Novatel. This will allow Dell computer users to send and receive emails, view websites, download files, and access corporate networks over a cellular data network.
Models featuring HSDPA technology will be marketed largely to customers in Europe, while those with the EV-DO chipset will be sold in Asia. Users in North America will have their choice of either technology.
All of the embedded modems will be backward compatible with 2G and 2.5G data networks, including GSM, GPRS, CDMA, and 1xRTT.
The first of Dell’s 3G-broadband-equipped laptops are expected to hit the market by the end of June.
