The world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia has joined with several other leading technology firms to promote the DVB-H mobile television standard.

The so-called “Mobile DTV Alliance”, which was announced on Monday, Intel, Texas Instruments, and Modeo, as well as Motorola, traditionally a major competitor of Nokia.

This groundbreaking new alliance will aim to encourage open standards for mobile TV broadcasts, especially DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld), which broadcasts directly to mobile phones, independent of mobile networks.

DVB-H technology is already operational, or being tested in Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States. Most US markets will likely have a fully functional DVB-H infrastructure in place by the end of 2007.
