Nokia is hoping to get a US patent for a cell phone feature that lets users get emergency help more quickly and easily than ever.

The system would be activated by simultaneously pushing two buttons on either side of the handset, which would speed-dial the closest emergency authorities, while discretely recording sound and pictures for transmission to a pre-arranged location.

GPS technology is also integrated, which automatically keeps track of a victim’s location, which could be especially useful in the case of kidnapping.

The patent application was initially filed on December 29th, but Nokia hasn’t yet released any definite plans about if or when such a feature would be available.

“The patent application does not mean that we are necessarily planning to install this emergency feature in any of our phones in the future. We are constantly developing new technologies in our research labs and applying for patents to protect our intellectual property rights,” said Nokia spokesman Damian Stathonikos.
