Nortel Networks has recently managed to recruit another key executive from Motorola, by hiring Dennis Carey as its executive vice president of corporate operations.

In addition to his experience as CEO of Morotola’s Integrated Electronic Systems Group, Carey’s resume includes positions with Home Depot, AT&T, and General Electric.

Although probably a good choice for Nortel, Carey’s appointment has raised a few legal eyebrows, due to a brief legal dispute last over the company’s appointment of Motorola chief operating officer, Mike Zafirovski, as its new CEO.

Although the dispute was settled quickly with an $11.5 million payment, the deal’s terms prohibited Nortel from hiring any Motorola employees. Nortel spokeswoman, Patricia Vernon, however, claims that this won’t be a problem due to the fact that Carey had already resigned from his previous position in November.

“Motorola is aware of this appointment and there are no issues,” Vernon was quoted as saying.

In his new position, Carey will be involved with a number of corporate departments within the Nortel organization. His job will include leading the company’s human resources and information services divisions.
