Norwegian browser maker, Opera Software, has just announced the worldwide release of an innovative new browser for mobile phones, Opera Mini.

This is an attempt by Opera to extend its potential market size by making their browser available on a wider range of low to mid priced handsets.

“With Opera Mini most people can start surfing the Web with the mobile phone they have today,” said Opera CEO, Jon S. von Tetzchner. “We are proud to be the first to offer full, mobile Web browsing to the majority of the world’s mobile phone users.”

The new browser has been available on a trial basis with Scandinavia and Germany for the past several months, in which time it has already gained over 1 million users in those countries.

Opera Mini promises to reduce the phone bills of users who pay per kilobyte downloaded, due to the fact that it compresses web pages by up to 80% before reformatting them for small screens using the software company’s trademarked rendering technology.

Additional features of the new browser include a built-in Google search box, as well as a customized bookmark list for a user’s favorite sites.
