Cell phone maker Sony Ericsson has just reported very impressive profits last quarter, almost tripling their results from a year previous.

Total net profits of the world’s 5th largest handset manufacturer came in at €144 million (US$174 million) in the fourth quarter, compared to €55 million in the last three months of 2004.

Quarterly sales grew 15% to €2.31 billion, while the company’s overall number of handset shipments stood at 16.1 million, an increase of 28%.

This runaway growth is largely due to the launch of Walkman phones that aim to capitalize on the increasing demand for handsets that can store and play music.

“This was another solid quarter for Sony Ericsson, and has enabled us to finish the year with great momentum,” said the President of Sony Ericsson, Miles Flint.
