Text Messaging Gets Personal
5:15 am on January 2, 2006 | Category: Mobile Devices, Telecom Services
A recent survey suggests that Americans are getting increasingly comfortable with the idea of expressing personal emotions through mobile text messaging services.
Over 60% of American SMS users claim that they have told someone that they loved or missed them in a text message. A further 27% have used them to flirt, 7% to ask someone on a date, and 2% to break up.
The effect is even greater in Europe, with about 70% of Germans saying either “I love you†or “I miss you†through a text message.
This just goes to show how much text messaging services have become integrated with the lives of ordinary people. Many people, in fact, actually find it easier to express their emotions in text format, than in person.
In the long run, it is only natural that as a technology becomes mainstream and popular, people will begin to “trust†it more and more, and allow it into their everyday lives.
Text messaging has been steadily increasing in popularity throughout North America for the past three years. In the past year alone, its use in the US has reached a monthly average of 7.3 billion text messages, up from 2.9 billion a year ago.
