Time Warner Executive Predicts 95% VoIP Penetration in 2010
6:00 am on January 30, 2006 | Category: Business, VoIP
Time Warner Telecom’s VP of Business Development and Strategy, Michael Rouleau, has made news recently by stating that 95% of businesses will be using VoIP by the end of the decade.
He believes that most businesses switch to VoIP for the primary reason that they want to “save a buck,†but that a lot of customers are dragging their heels, due to concerns about service quality. This is fueled by the fact that a few VoIP “horror stories†make the rounds a lot faster than stories about the thousands of businesses that are using VoIP with perfect success.
In the end, Rouleau thinks that the long-term success of VoIP will depend on providers’ ability to demonstrate a positive experience for end users. If they can do this effectively, he says that the penetration rate of VoIP will soar, potentially reaching 95% by 2010.
While these figures are certainly on the overly optimistic side, Rouleau’s overall point is definitely valid. Providers being able to prove that there’s nothing scary or inferior about VoIP will convince more businesses to jump on the bandwagon, which will in turn trigger more interest.
As for whether we’ll be seeing 90%+ penetration rates four years from now, that’s a tad unrealistic. But as VoIP’s reputation and marketability increase, these kinds of predictions seem a little less crazy all the time.
