UK Orders ISPs to Help Track Down Software Pirates
11:55 pm on January 31, 2006 | Category: Business, Internet, Law, Regulation
High courts in the UK have ordered ten of the country’s top ISPs to relinquish the personal details of 150 suspected violators of copyright law.
The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST) revealed yesterday that these actions are the result of a year-long undercover operation to catch and bring criminal and civil charges against the perpetrators.
FAST claims that this ruling is just the beginning of a large-scale campaign against software piracy. “We expect to be bringing these actions anytime and anywhere we see software being misused,†commented senior legal counsel, Julian Heathcote Hobbins.
Although this kind of long-term, investigative campaign is a lot fairer than the warrant-free abuse of government power previously proposed by Canada’s now ousted Liberal government, it is still very open to misuse. It will be essential to monitor this process extensively to ensure that the privacy rights of law-abiding citizens remain completely intact.
