Palm and Verizon have now officially released the much-anticipated Treo 700w smartphone, which runs on the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, and has a high-speed EV-DO modem.
This handy new PDA smartphone has a 312 MHz Intel processor, 256 MB of memory, a built-in 1.3-megapixel digital camera, and the ability to sync with other devices via Bluetooth 1.2. The device also features a battery life of 4.7 hours of talk time between recharging.
In terms of software, the 700w includes readers and editors for each component of the Windows Office suite, as well as Windows Media Player 10, and enhanced version of Pocket Outlook, and several unique Palm extensions. It also features a specialized voice mail system with pause and fast forward buttons, and an “Ignore with SMS†feature that autoresponds with an SMS message when you are unable to answer your phone.
All in all, Palm’s latest smartphone does a good job of building on previous models, and combining their functionality with the Widows Mobile operating system. Palm does claim, however, this isn’t the end of its own Palm OS-based models. Instead, it’s merely a smart business decision to capitalize on the large corporate market that insists on using Windows devices.
The Treo 700w will start retailing today at Verizon Wireless stores across America. It will cost $499, reducible to $399 for first-time customers who subscribe to both voice and data plans.
