With cutthroat competition heating up the satellite radio industry, XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. is attempting to maintain its dominant position by innovating and expanding its reach into the entertainment universe.

XM announced the impending launch of several new products on Wednesday, not the least of which is the XM Passport. Created in collaboration with Audiovox, the Passport is a small 1.3” x 1.65” cartridge that can plug into other entertainment devices and serve as a satellite radio tuner.

In the coming years, several of the satellite radio giant’s partners, including Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, JVG, LG Electronics, and Samsung will release XM-ready media devices, including CD players, DVD players, and stereos that are compatible with the Passport. The Passport will also be able to connect with non-compatible devices via a special docking station.

In addition to its high versitility, the XM Passport will have a great price advantage, costing just $29.99. This could attract subscribers who are interested in satellite radio, but don’t want to pay $350 for their own receiver. Because of this obvious price appeal, the Passport could significantly increase XM’s potential market reach when it launches in the spring.
