With the Chinese government set to issue its first 3G spectrum licenses in the near future, makers of handsets and other mobile equipment are getting ready for some stiff competition in the world’s most populous country.

The emergence of 3G technology in China is expected to have a major effect on the country’s cell phone industry.

China is already the world’s biggest mobile phone market with 400 million subscribers, and wireless revenues are expected to grow significantly once 3G is launched and a wide range of new services become possible.
