The University of Bath in England is acting on plans to creating a citywide wireless computing network in that city, as part of a cutting edge research project on mobile technology.

The £1.6 million Cityware project will involve the construction of a “pervasive” mobile computing zone, which uses a variety of wireless standards to provide computer services to residents and tourists wherever they are in the city.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communication will be used to help visitors accurately find their way around the city, while providing wireless games, cultural activities, and information services for people working, exploring, socializing, or relaxing in the area.

Combining all this highly advanced technology with Bath’s 18th century Georgian architecture will likely be one of the most interesting challenges associated with the Cityware network.

The project will also attempt to identify trends and investigate the ways that people use this kind of citywide wireless communication web.

“One of the innovative strands of the project is the involvement of a cohort of 30 volunteers who live in the city so that we can explore how people use technology over a period of time,” said Dr Danae Stanton Fraser, a professor at the University of Bath. “Volunteers will be given state-of-the-art mobile phones and will work with the project over the next three years to see how these technologies affect their lives. They will also provide feedback on our new applications.”

This project in Bath will likely be a hotbed of research and activity in the world of wireless information technology for the months and years to come. Its results and findings will likely be used in shaping the future of wireless computing in other cities in the future.
