For a few months now, reports have been circulating about the possibility of a citywide Wi-Fi network in San Francisco, California.

Internet giant, Google, first made a bid to build such a network back in October, but only now are they taking more aggressive steps to make the plan a reality.

Google has now put together a joint proposal with ISP, EarthLink, which has also been considered a frontrunner for the San Francisco Wi-Fi contract. The new plan would see Google offering a limited level of free connectivity throughout the city, and EarthLink giving the customers the option to upgrade to a fee-based tier.

Together, there is little doubt that the two companies stand a much better chance of being picked by San Francisco’s city council to spearhead the project. Both of them have already succeeded in making a good impression in other cities, with EarthLink and Google building citywide wireless networks in Philadelphia and Mountain View, respectively.
