The market for next-generation voice communication equipment grew by 50% in 2005, to a total value of US$2.5 billion, according to new research by Infonetics.

The main force driving this increase is increased penetration of broadband, which is beginning to grow more slowly, but is already present in 42% of American households.

“Broadband has now reached critical mass, so it makes sense to add a voice component to it,” says Infonetics analyst, Stéphane Téral.

Nowhere is this more true than in Asia Pacific countries, which now lead the world in VoIP adoption with 14.2 million subscribers. This number is expected to increase to 49.9 million by the end of 2009.
