Microsoft executives announced on Sunday that the company’s much anticipated push email software for mobile devices is finally ready to hit the market.

Despite Microsoft’s late entrance into the push email market, they believe that there are plenty of customers still to be won. There are a billion cell phone users worldwide, and 400 million Outlook users, but only 10 million are having emails pushed to their mobile devices.

“We look at the universe out there and we know there is just a huge, huge opportunity yet to be met,” said Microsoft Vice President, Suzan DelBene in a telephone interview.

Several major wireless carriers, including Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Orange, and Vodafone, will be offering free upgrades to customers that allow them to use the “Direct Push” email service, as well as several new security features.

Hewlett-Packard’s new iPaq hw6900 Mobile Messenger, along with the Fujitsu Siements FS Pocket Loox, and Gigabyte g-Smart will be among the first mobile devices to pre-install Microsoft’s new software.

We will likely hear a lot more about this useful new service from the 3GSM World Congress, a cell phone trade show in Barcelona this week, where Microsoft CEO is scheduled to give a keynote speech on Tuesday.
