Microsoft recently announced at 3GSM cell phone trade show in Barcelona that it plans to extend its corporate instant messaging software for use with mobile devices.

The new product is called Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile, and will run on Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005. The mobile messaging software can be integrated with desktop PCs, so as to allow businesspeople on the go the freedom to communicate when away from their desks.

In addition to its core function as a secure instant messaging platform, the new application will include VoIP functionality, as well as “presence” tools, allowing your contacts to see whether you’re in the office, on the phone, or away from your workplace.

“The new client is a key component of Microsoft’s vision for unified communications, putting people at the center and enabling information workers to have access to real-time communications capabilities virtually anytime, anywhere, on any device,” said Microsoft executive, Gurdeep Pall, in a 3GSM press statement on Tuesday.

The statement went on to say that the software is set for release within the next 60 days.
