Motorola has recently announced the development of a new solution that will allow cell phone users to pay bills and make payments from their handsets.

The new M-Wallet solution comes with an easy-to-use mobile interface that allows quick access to bank accounts and even credit cards wherever there is cell phone service. In the future, this could theoretically eliminate the need for customers to carry credit or debit cards around in their wallets.

M-Wallet will also address the needs of retailers who have customer loyalty programs. There will be options for consumers to securely make payments, and even collect loyalty points on their mobile phones.

“Mobile phones are no longer just about conducting conversations, they are now emerging as a center of people’s lives for every day transactions,” said Motorola’s vice president of Applications Management, Navin Mehta. “With M-Wallet, Motorola continues to offer industry leading applications that not only bring convenience and flexibility to subscribers but help operators differentiate and advance their portfolios to increase mobile data usage.”

The company claims that the new service will have a high level of compatibility, working with GSM, CDMA, and iDEN cellular networks. It will work on a wide variety of handsets, including those running Symbian, PocketPC, Palm OS, J2ME, SimTk, or Brew operating systems.

Although Motorola hasn’t yet given any word on when this innovative technology will become available, interested users will be able to get their first peak at it next week at 3GSM in Barcelona.
