Motorola announced at 3GSM yesterday that it had signed a deal with Microsoft to use Windows Media software in a new series of mobile phones, which will be marketed alongside the current iTunes phones developed in partnership with Apple.

The world’s second largest handset maker plans to launch between one and three Windows Media-based phones in the second half of 2006, according to Motorola executive, Chris White.

There are no plans to integrate the new line of handsets with current iTunes music phones like the ROKR E1 and SLVR L7. “The iTunes phones will remain a separate line of products,” White explained.

It is inevitable, however, that the Windows Media software’s incompatibility with iTunes will force customers to make a choice. And the promise of over-the-air music downloads, among other nifty features, could mean that Motorola is willing to move away from Apple, and tilt buyers in the direction of Windows-based music capability.
