Qualcomm Executive Encourages Apple to Create Wireless iPod
7:05 am on February 28, 2006 | Category: Business, Mobile Devices
Qualcomm CEO, Paul Jacobs said yesterday that he thinks launching a wireless version of the popular iPod music player would be a good business decision for Apple Computer Inc.
Jacobs says that a wireless version of the device would be a good way to maintain an edge over the competition, which now includes a variety of music-enabled mobile handsets, smartphones, and other handheld devices.
“It makes sense to me that they would see the phone as potential competition … To me having the wide area (wireless) connection is really a cool thing,” Jacobs commented.
The Qualcomm executive reiterated, however, that although he discusses business with Apple executives “every so often,” he doesn’t have any insight into the company’s development plans. So far Apple’s future plans for the iPod remain totally unknown to those outside the company.
One thing that is for sure though is that Qualcomm potentially has a lot to gain if the popular music player does go wireless. By getting its hardware into one of the most popular entertainment devices ever made, the mobile chipmaker could open up a whole new market and greatly increase its overall exposure to end-users.
