Despite having to defend against a sticky patent lawsuit, Research in Motion managed to overtake Palm as the top overall provider of PDAs last year.

Statistics collected by research firm, Gartner, show that RIM shipped a total of 3.2 million units over the course of 2005. That represents over 21% of the 14.9 million total PDA shipments.

The total number of handhelds sold was up 19% from 13.2 million units in 2004. This increase includes the huge increase in demand for PDA/smartphone combos and wireless email devices, which was slightly offset by the continuing decline of the standalone PDA market.
