Hard disk maker, Seagate Technology, has announced plans to begin selling a higher capacity memory drive for cell phones.

The new drive will have a capacity of 12GB, an impressive 50% increase over Seagate’s existing 8GB handset drive. These types of high-capacity 1” drives are becoming more and more useful in this age of convergence between cell phones and digital music players.

Seagate’s new memory drive will be able to achieve this much greater capacity by using a technology called perpendicular recording. This involves charged particles being stood on end, rather than running parallel to the surface of the disk, which in turn allows a greater amount of memory to occupy a smaller space.

In addition to its high capacity, the new drive will also be much more power efficient than older models, consuming almost a third less energy.

This advanced new cell phone component will likely be available by the third quarter of this year. The company hasn’t yet given any formal pricing information, but senior vice president, Brodie Keast, did mention that the price per gigabyte would be lower than the current 8GB version.
