Sony Ericsson announced the pending release of its latest Walkman music phone yesterday, at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona, Spain.
The W950 will be the sixth Walkman phone to hit the market, and is the most advanced design yet, featuring 4GB of storage space, and 3G wireless connectivity for high-speed over-the-air music downloads. Music formats supported include MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC+, WAV, and m4a.
With a capacity of up to 4000 songs, the new device features a new navigation system to help users organize and search their massive music library. It enables searching by song, artist, or playlist, and visually displays album covers for easier recognition.
Other features include a QVGA TFT 2.6” touch-screen display, as well as support for web browsing, push email, video streaming, and 3D gaming. Bluetooth wireless connectivity allows users to stream music onto wireless headsets for easier and more convenient listening.
With its huge memory and miriad of useful features this new handset appears to be a direct assault on the Apple iPod and its dominance of the mobile music market. It is expected to hit retail markets in the third quarter of this year.
