US telecom giant, Sprint Nextel has finally announced a separate brand name for its local phone division, which is about to be spun off into a separate company.

The new “Embarq” brand will become the name of America’s fifth largest local phone company, with a total of 7.4 million customers in 18 states as of last fall. The division had revenues of $6.02 billion in 2004, and will have about 20,000 employees when it becomes independent in the second quarter.

“This is a company that will be aggressive and innovative in the marketplace,” said Embarq’s soon-to-be-CEO, Dan Hesse.

Ultimately, however, it is likely that Embarq will face competition from its parent company, with more and more customers abandoning their local phone lines for wireless subscriptions.
