British mobile software designer, Symbian, and US chipmaker, Freescale, have announced that they will work together on creating a design blueprint for 3G smartphones.

Although the partnership is currently only focused on creating a basic blueprint, Symbian claims that it expects handsets based on this “reference design” to be hitting the market by the first half of 2007.

The new design will help to open up opportunities for mobile phone producers that don’t have enough engineering strength to develop models of their own from scratch.

“We provide the core of the handset so that they can concentrate on design, features and the user interface. We anticipate a more level playing field,” said Symbian CEO, Nigel Clifford.

This is being seen as a surprising move by some as it will help smaller phone makers more effectively compete with the giants of the industry, many of which are shareholders in Symbian.
