Verizon Challenges Comcast With FiOS TV Service
6:00 am on February 23, 2006 | Category: Business, Telecom Services
Verizon Communications is continuing its gradual entrance into the FiOS TV market, with the launch of its fiber optic digital television service being rolled out in Reading, Massachusetts.
This is especially significant because of the fact that Reading is a stronghold for Comcast, which is a leading provider of regular cable television service. By venturing into this area, Verizon is launching a direct competitive assault against Comcast, which it already competes with in the high-speed internet market.
The increased convergence of phone, television, and internet communication services is bringing a lot of major providers into direct competition with each other. We can expect to see this type of competitive clash more and more in the future in both US and Canadian markets.
At this point, the only uncertainty is about just how much competition the market can take. Whether all of these telecom giants can exist side by side, or if they will be forced to merge to survive, remains to be seen in the years to come.
