Verizon Lays Fiber Optic Cables in Long Beach, California
8:00 am on February 10, 2006 | Category: Telecom Services, Web Services
Verizon has begun installing fiber optic cables in some neighborhoods of East Long Beach, California. The new cables are designed to provide internet access at ten times the speed of DSL.
The company is calling this the first step of a citywide project, and will be placing the cables underground alongside the existing copper wiring.
“It’s the next generation of networks,” said Verizon spokesman Mike Murray. “Essentially, the fiber optic lines will be at least 10 times faster than DSL.”
The lowest tier of fiber optic internet service will have an estimated cost of $34.95, and will deliver speeds of up to 5 Mbps, a significant increase over the 1.5 Mbps available with DSL. Higher tiers could potentially deliver data transfer speeds of 15 to 30 Mbps.
In addition to carrying IP data, the new cables will lay the groundwork for a new cable network called Fios TV. Although it will likely take a few years for this service to become fully available, Verizon is gradually wiring cities across the United States, in preparation for the launch of this advanced new network.
