Chinese Government May Soon Grant VoIP Licenses
12:05 pm on March 22, 2006 | Category: Business, Regulation, VoIP
Recent reports in Chinese newspapers indicate that the government of China may be preparing to relax regulations on the internet phone industry, and begin to grant VoIP licenses to telecom carriers.
According to the Beijing News, the government is allowing a telecom provider in southern China to conduct a VoIP pilot program, and could beginning allowing carriers to apply for internet phone licenses as early as next year.
Chinese web portal, Tom Online, confirmed the report, but gave a different timeline, saying that the government won’t be giving out licenses until 2008.
China’s embassy to the UK, meanwhile, refused to confirm or deny the Beijing News report.
If China does indeed begin to allow VoIP, it could be good news for internet telephony providers like Skype, whose paid services are currently blocked in the country.
