Google has patched up a flaw in its Gmail web-based email service, after a teenaged blogger discovered the potential vulnerability.

The flaw could have allowed JavaScript code to run while a message was open, possibly allowing malicious code to compromise a user’s Gmail account. The 14-year-old user discovered this flaw when sending code between two email accounts, and posted it on his Google-hosted blog.

Google fixed the flaw “very shortly after the initial blog post went up,” according to a representative from the Mountain View internet giant.. “We learned of a minor security flaw in Gmail a little while ago and worked quickly to fix the problem, which has now been resolved,” the representative said.

These kinds of minor but potentially damaging vulnerabilities are a concern to all major email providers. It is important for a company like Google to monitor these things extensively, in order to keep a reputation of maintaining the safety and security of users and their data.
