The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has announced plans to integrate ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless technology with the existing Bluetooth wireless standard, which will allow future devices to transfer data at a much faster rate.

UWB is the wireless equivalent of USB, and was developed by another industry group called the WiMedia Alliance, which includes such big name companies as Intel, HP, and Microsoft.

Existing Bluetooth technology only works for low-speed uses like connecting devices with wireless keyboards and headsets, but the integration of UWB technology will let it be used for much higher bandwidth applications like transferring large music files and high-definition video data.

The first high-speed Bluetooth products are expected to hit the market in late 2007, with widespread availability by 2008.
