Despite a lack of new high-speed internet customers in the US, the global market for DSL internet access is still expanding at an impressive rate.

Research firm, Infonetics expects the total number of DSL subscribers to climb by 96% between 2005 and 2009, for a total market size of 245 million users. Most of this growth will take place in emerging markets, where people are only now upgrading to broadband connections en masse.

This growth is already having a major effect on DSL aggregation hardware revenues, which rose by 23% last year to $6.37 billion, while total shipments jumped from 59.8 million to 82.3 million units, an increase of 38%. Infonetics analytst predict that revenue from DSL aggregation hardware will expand a further 65% to reach $10.5 billion in 2009.

In addition to the obvious contribution from emerging markets, a great deal of this growth in hardware demand will come from established markets, where demand is increasing for other broadband services, aside from just internet access. IPTV, for example, along with a variety of advanced triple play services are beginning to make real headway with American, Canadian, and European consumers.

“We are seeing phenomenal growth in IP DSLAMs and broadband loop carriers, both of which will serve as the primary platforms for the delivery of triple-play services in the years to come,” said Infonetics Research directing analyst, Jeff Heynen, in a statement. “Volume shipments of VDSL are beginning in earnest and will drive dramatic growth around the world beginning in 2007.”
