Usage of instant messaging communication software has soared past 90% among young internet users in Taiwan.
According to a research survey published on Saturday, 92.7% of 15 to 39 year old users have used instant messaging at least once in the past month. About half (50.1%) of respondents say that they have two or more instant messaging applications installed on their computers.
The youngest users surveyed, aged 15 to 19, showed the highest penetration rate, with 99% of respondents being IM users.
The survey was conduced earlier this month by a market research firm called Insight Xplorer, and involved 1,524 internet users in the small island country.
It was found that MSN Messenger is the most popular messaging software among Taiwanese users, with a total penetration of 77.1%, followed by Yahoo! Messenger with 56.1%, and Skype with 20.1%.
