Lycos Launches Free PC-to-Phone VoIP Service
6:00 am on March 28, 2006 | Category: VoIP, Web Services
Lycos, a popular web portal owned by Telefonica SA, is introducing a new ad-supported program that offers free PC-to-Phone VoIP calling.
The service is being supported through a deal with incentive marketing agency, Netflix, which has made a name for itself by giving away free CDs and DVDs over the internet. Users will be able to compete incentive-based promotional offers, such as free sign-ups and credit card applications, in exchange for free VoIP calls.
Although a few other companies have started offering ad-supported VoIP services, Lycos is the first to use incentive marketing, and also the first to provide free PC-based phone numbers for incoming calls.
Each user gets 100 free minutes to try out the service, after which they can earn more minutes by completing offers. There is also an option to buy talk time at the very reasonable rate of $0.01/minute for long distance calls within the US and Canada.
Lycos has made sure to keep pricing very competitive, in order to effectively compete with other online VoIP providers like Skype, Yahoo, and Microsoft.
The Lycos Phone application works on Windows 2000/XP-based computers, and provides free PC-to-PC video calls, text messaging, and movie previews, in addition to its core PC-to-Phone offering.
