With home wireless networks becoming and increasingly efficient and popular way to get online, a much greater cross-section of customers are becoming interested in the technology.

A lot of these new users, however, have no idea how to set up wireless networking routers and other hardware, which has led to a high level of customer frustration.

Many of these non-web-savvy users find it difficult to navigate the free assistance available online, and not everyone has the money to pay for professional installation.

This means that a lot of frustrated buyers simply give up and return their wireless networking hardware to the store. Although exact statistics aren’t available, it is estimated that anywhere between 10% and 25% of buyers end up taking their routers back to the store.

Wireless hardware manufacturers are troubled by this trend, for obvious reasons, and are seeking ways to simplify the network setup process. Efforts are also being made to better educate customers on the exact meaning of terms like “router” and “IP address.”

Only when the basics of Wi-Fi technology are understood by everyday consumers will wireless local area networks become a truly mainstream way to access the internet.
