A recent survey by telecom research firm, Telephia, suggests that the Motorola RAZR mobile phone has gained significant ground the European wireless market.

Already the top selling phone in the United States, the thin and stylish RAZR has now taken the top spot in Europe, with a total of 5.3 million units sold.

Finnish handset giant, Nokia, is still the top overall mobile phone maker in Europe, with its brand on five of the continent’s top eight phones. The loss of the top spot, however, could be a wakeup call for the world’s #1 handset maker, which has focused largely on low to mid level devices in the past couple of years.

Nokia is doing well in developing markets with its low-cost strategy, but it will have to focus more attention on more advanced phones if it hopes to compete with the RAZR in the eyes of European and North American users.
